Žabljak is a mountain town in Montenegro, located on the Durmitor plateau at an altitude of around 1,450 meters. It is the highest town in the Balkans and a center of mountain tourism in Montenegro. Nearby is Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the well-known Black Lake (Crno jezero).

Žabljak is popular year-round – in summer for hiking, cycling, and nature, and in winter for skiing and snow sports. The climate is harsh and mountainous, and the landscapes are incredibly attractive, with numerous lakes, rivers, and forests.

Main Features:

The area surrounding Žabljak is home to over 18 glacial lakes, locally known as “mountain eyes.” The most famous of these is Black Lake, which consists of two smaller lakes connected by a narrow channel.
The Tara River, which flows near Žabljak, boasts one of the deepest canyons in Europe – the Tara Canyon, which is the second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in Colorado. The Tara River is also famous for rafting.
Žabljak is an excellent destination for nature lovers. In addition to hiking and rafting, it offers opportunities for cycling, horseback riding, camping, spelunking, and winter sports at the Savin Kuk ski resort.
The town features traditional mountain architecture and warm hospitality, with local cuisine offering specialties like kačamak, cicvara, prosciutto, and homemade cheeses.
Durmitor is the mountain massif surrounding Žabljak, and its highest peak is Bobotov Kuk, which rises to 2,523 meters. It’s a favorite destination for hikers and adventurers.

Getting There:
The easiest way to reach Žabljak is by car. The town is connected to major Montenegrin cities via paved roads, though the terrain can make the drive a bit challenging due to the mountains.
From Podgorica: The trip takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. You first go toward Nikšić, then continue toward Žabljak. The route is well-marked but winding, so the drive can be slow.
From Budva or Kotor: The journey takes about 3 to 4 hours and also goes through Nikšić before reaching Žabljak.
From Belgrade: The trip takes around 8 to 9 hours. The road leads through Nikšić and then on to Žabljak.
