Ostrog Monastery

Montenegro

Nikšić

Ostrog Monastery is a 17th-century Orthodox monastery, built high into the rock face of Ostroška Greda mountain, between Nikšić and Podgorica. The monastery attracts hundreds of thousands of believers and tourists from around the world, regardless of their faith.

The monastery consists of the Lower and Upper Monastery. The Upper Monastery, carved into a white vertical cliff, appears almost unreal and offers a magnificent view over the Zeta Valley. A steep road leads to the Upper Monastery, and many pilgrims walk the final part as a sign of respect and faith.

Ostrog is more than a religious site – it is a meeting point of spirituality, tradition, and natural beauty.

The monastery has been renovated several times, especially after fires and wars, but it has preserved its authentic spiritual and historical significance.

What can you see?

Upper Monastery – Built into the cliff, it includes two small churches: the Church of the Presentation of the Holy Mother of God and the Church of the Holy Cross. The relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog are kept here.
Lower Monastery – Located further down the mountain, it includes a church, monastic quarters, and a guesthouse. Pilgrims often gather here before beginning their walk to the Upper Monastery.
Spring of Saint Basil – Believed to have healing properties; visitors often take the water home as a blessing.

Visitor tips:
Modest clothing is recommended (especially for women – scarves and longer skirts).
During major religious holidays, the monastery is extremely crowded – it’s best to arrive early.
