Prozor Fortress

Perched on a cliff approximately 200 meters above the town of Vrlika, Prozor Fortress offers an impressive view of the Vrličko Polje valley, Lake Peruća, and the surrounding mountains Dinara, Kamešnica, and Svilaja. Built in the early 15th century, it was first mentioned in 1406 when Bosnian nobleman and Prince of Split, Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, received the fortress from King Ladislaus of Naples. Hrvoje expanded and fortified the castle to serve as part of the defensive system against the increasing Ottoman incursions. The fortress is constructed on a hard-to-reach elevation above the Vrličko Polje and has an irregular rectangular layout with a central tower.

Today, the remnants of the fortress are partially restored and open to visitors. It can be reached on foot from the center of Vrlika by following a trail leading to the top of the cliff. Prozor Fortress stands as a significant monument of medieval architecture and a testament to the rich history of this region.
